Evaluating the Horse for Back Pain

Location and Date:

The following items will be discussed and demonstrated:

I. Criteria of Assessment
Changes in the following areas:

Attitude:
  • Ears Pinned during Saddling
  • Nervous Under Saddle
  • Cranky, Rebellious
  • Bucking, etc

Performance/Gait:
  • Shortened Stride
  • Difficulty with Collection
  • Difficulty with Lead Changes

Muscle Development:
  • Over Developed Neck and Gluteals
  • Atrophy of the Trapezeus (Below Withers)
  • Lack of Topline Muscling

Spinal Changes:
  • 'Roach Back'
  • 'Sway Back'
  • Spondylosis
  • Prominent Sacrum

Other Factors:
  • Dental
  • Farrier
  • Saddle and Bridal


II. Evaluating the Horse: Visually and by Palpatation Things to Look For:
  • Symmetry of Muscle Development
  • Muscle Atrophy
  • Balanced Topline
  • Pelvic Rotation

Things to Feel For:
  • Large Muscle Groups, Specific Motor Points
  • Friction Soreness Vs. Deep Muscle Soreness
  • Palpatating the Saddle Area


III. Therapeutic Techniques for the Layman
  • Manual Massage
  • Therapeutic Exercises: Tummy Tucks, Logan's Point
  • Magnetic Therapy: Wraps, Mag Boys
